About Lumpen Radio
Lumpen Radio (WLPN-LP 105.5FM) reads as the broadcast arm of a genuinely long-running Chicago countercultural institution: Lumpen began in 1991 as a scrappy, DIY punk-adjacent zine (The Lumpen Times) out of Champaign and Bridgeport before evolving, under the Public Media Institute umbrella, into a magazine, record label, festival network, and — since 2015 — a 24/7 low-power FM station. The strongest impression is of a station whose legitimacy comes from three decades of grassroots, anti-corporate media-making rather than from a polished contemporary radio brand.
