About NTS Radio
NTS is the reference point against which most of this entire field of independent radios is now measured, and it has earned that position less through a distinct sonic identity than through a philosophy: "Don't Assume," borrowed from an obscure Maggie Nicols/Peter Nu free-jazz LP. A knowledgeable listener spending hours with it will come away with an impression less of "a sound" than of a curatorial machine operating at enormous scale — six million monthly listeners, some 600 shows broadcasting from studios in London, Manchester, Los Angeles and roughly sixty cities worldwide — that still somehow protects the eccentricity of its individual hosts. Founder Femi Adeyemi built it in 2011 out of a redundancy payout and a defunct blog (Nuts To Soup), explicitly modeling it on pirate radio, US college radio and the community around the club Plastic People.
